Geoturism, Caving and Speleology

The Azores are part of an extensive range of underwater mountains (the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). Their relatively recent formation and the progressive volcanic eruptions are reflected in the terrain, characterized by accentuated reliefs, well-preserved volcanic structures, and geomonuments, an impressive and unique phenomenon. Many volcanic cavities of the Central Group, both vertical caverns and lava tubes, are open to visitors for speleology and caving.
